The business was commenced in 1919 by Alan George Cruickshank in a small office in Flinders Street in Adelaide, servicing typewriters and selling associated stationery, ribbons, carbons etc. The business was called Cruickshank Typewriter Service and used as its trademark the word “Cruiser”. From these small beginnings a move was made to 3 Peel Street and then to 26 Peel Street (an old bacon factory with two floors and a basement). In the early 1950s, a further move was made to 151-153 Gouger Street and Cruickshank Pty. Ltd. was incorporated as a private company. As the business expanded (particularly the printing department), the old house at 155 Gouger Street was purchased, demolished and a new factory and office/showroom established. With the further expansion of the company, premises at 161 Gouger Street were acquired for a stationery store. By the early 1970s the business had passed to Alan James Cruickshank, a son of the founder, and currently has a staff of sixteen. The company remains the only complete printer and stationer in the Adelaide city area and the staff take pride in their professional approach to all aspects of the business. The company is determined that the business will continue to grow – not on price, but on quality, service, product knowledge and expertise. |
